Microbact (Azithromycin)

  • Each tablet contains Azithromycin 250mg/500 mg.
  • Indicated in the treatment of uncomplicatedmultidrug resistant enteric fever only.
  • Azithromycin is the first of a subclass of macrolides antibiotics.The mode of action of azithromycin is inhibition of protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the 50s ribosomal subunit and preventing translocation of peptides.
  • Azithromycin capsules should be given as a single daily dose.Adults, children and adolescents with a body weight of 45 kg or over:The total dose is 1500 mg, administered as 500 mg once daily for 3 days. Alternatively, the same total dose (1500 mg) can be administered in a period of 5 days, 500 mg on the first day and 250 mg on day 2 to 5.Azithromycin tablets can be taken with or without food.
  • The use of this product is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic and in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of azithromycin.
  • As with erythromycin and other macrolides, rare serious allergic reactions have been reported. Consider discontinuing the drug if allergic reactions occur.Caution should be exercised in patients with hepatic impairment. Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea: Patients should be evaluated if diarrhea occurs. Should be used with caution in patients with certain cardiovascular disorders associated with QT prolongation. use of azithromycin should be undertaken with caution in patients with significant hepatic disease
  • Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Avoid use during lactation.Azithromycin tablets are not suitable for patients under 45 kg body weight.
  • Nelfinavir: Close monitoring for known adverse reactions of azithromycin, such as liver enzyme abnormalities and hearing impairment, is warranted. Warfarin: Use with azithromycin may increase coagulation parameters; monitor prothrombin time.
  • Most common adverse reactions are diarrhea,nausea, abdominal pain or vomiting.
