Ritecef O 50 Dry Syrup (Cefixime)

  • Each 5ml of dry syrup contains Cefixime 50mg/100mg.
  • For the treatment of enteric (typhoid) fever and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, acute exacerbations of chronic Bronchitis caused by susceptible bacterial pathogens.
  • Cefixime is a semi-synthetic, oral third-generation cephalosporin, which has marked bactericidal activity against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Bactericidal action of cefixime results from inhibition of cell-wall synthesis.
  • Paediatric patients (6 months or older): The recommended dose is 8 mg/kg/day. This may be administered as a single daily dose or may be given in two divided doses, as 4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
  • Cefixime is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to cefixime or other cephalosporins or any of the other components of the product.
  • Anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions (including shock and fatalities) have been reported with the use of cefixime.
  • There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in human pregnancy, lactation and infants. Efficacy and safety in infants aged less than 6 months have not been established.
  • Increased prothrombin time, with or without clinical bleeding, has been reported when cefixime is administered concomitantly with warfarin and anticoagulants. Drug monitoring may be of assistance in detecting alterations in carbamazepine plasma concentrations as elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported.
  • Most common adverse reactions are gastrointestinal such as diarrhea, nausea, loose stools, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and vomiting.
