Indicated in the treatment of UTI, RTI and Typhoid fever.
Cefixime is a semi-synthetic, oral third-generation cephalosporin, which has marked in vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Bactericidal action of cefixime results from inhibition of cell-wall synthesis.
Adults: 400 mg daily
Cefixime is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to cefixime or other cephalosporins or any of the other components of the product.
Hypersensitivity reactions including shock and fatalities have been reported with cefixime. Discontinue use if a reaction occurs. Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea: Evaluate if diarrhea occurs.Cefixime may be associated with a fall in prothrombin activity
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in human pregnancy and lactation. Cefixime should, therefore, not be used in pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician.
Elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported in post-marketing experience when cefixime is administered concomitantly. Drug monitoring may be of assistance in detecting alterations in carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Most common adverse reactions are gastrointestinal such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia,dizziness, vomiting.
