Panex CR Tablets (Paroxetine )

  • Each tablet contains12.5mg / 25mg of paroxetine hydrochloride
  • Indicated for the treatment of Major depressive episode, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic disorder
  • Paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) inhibits the reuptake of serotonin at the neuronal membrane, enhances serotonergic neurotransmission by reducing turnover of the neurotransmitter. It prolongs its activity at synaptic receptor sites and potentiates 5-HT in the CNS.
  • Major Depressive Disorder: should be administered as a single daily dose, usually in the morning, with or without food. The recommended initial dose is 25 mg/day, not responding to a 25-mg dose, dose increases, in 12.5-mg/day increments, up to a maximum of 62.5 mg/day. Panic Disorder: Patients should be started on 12.5 mg/day. Dose changes should occur in 12.5-mg/day increments and at intervals of at least 1 week. The maximum dosage should not exceed 75 mg/day.
  • Hypersensitivity to paroxetine or any of its inactive ingredients, use of MAOI’s is contraindicated because of an increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
  • Monitor patients for clinical worsening and suicidal thinking or behavior; Serotonin Syndrome or Neuroleptic Malignant (NMS)-like syndrome can occur
  • patient becomes pregnant while taking paroxetine, she should be advised of the potential harm to the fetus. Unless the benefits of paroxetine to the mother justify continuing treatment, consideration should be given to either discontinuing paroxetine therapy or switching to another antidepressant. paroxetine is secreted in human milk, and caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Is not approved for use in pediatric patients.
  • paroxetine can inhibit the metabolism of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 including desipramine, risperidone, and atomoxetine.
