Alpha-lipoic acid and its reduced metabolite, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), form a redox couple and scavenge a wide range of reactive oxygen species. Its antioxidant activity benefits in diabetic polyneuropathy; Folic acid is an essential cofactor for enzymes involved in DNA and RNA synthesis. More specifically, folic acid is required by the body for the synthesis of purines, pyrimidines, and methionine before incorporation into DNA or protein; Benfotiamine enhances transketolase activity an important enzyme in glucose metabolism, blocks three of the major molecular pathways leading to hyperglycemic damage. Benfotiamine corrects thiamine deficiency and can decrease the incidence of neuropathies.
