Moxigram Eye Ointment (Moxifloxacin)

  • Moxifloxacin 0.5% eye ointment.
  • For the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible organism.
  • The antibacterial action of moxifloxacin results from inhibition of the topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential enzyme that is involved in the replication, transcription and repair of bacterial DNA. Topoisomerase IV is an enzyme known to play a key role in the partitioning of the chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division.
  • Apply half inch ribbon of ointment in the lower cul-de-sac of the affected eye 3 times per day for first two days. For the next five days apply half inch ribbon twice a day.
  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to any of the excipients and to other quinolones.
  • For topical ophthalmic use only. Hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis, Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi Patients should be advised not to wear contact lenses if they have signs or symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis. Patient may experience mild blurring of vision.
  • There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, nursing woman. Safety and effectiveness in infants below the age of one year have not been established
  • Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with moxifloxacin eye ointment. However, the systemic administration of some quinolones has been shown toelevate plasma concentrations of theophylline, interfere with the metabolism of caffeine, and enhancethe effects of the oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives, and has been associated with transientelevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving systemic cyclosporine concomitantly
  • Conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, sub-conjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing.
