Microgat eye ointment (Gatifloxacin)

  • Gatifloxacin 0.3% Eye Ointment.
  • the treatment of external bacterial infections of eyes.
  • Gatifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial drug. The antibacterial action of gatifloxacin results from inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential enzyme that is involved in the replication, transcription and repair of bacterial DNA. Topoisomerase IV is an enzyme known to play a key role in the partitioning of the chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division
  • Apply half inch ribbon of ointment in the lower cul-de-sac of the affected eye 3 times per day for first two days. For the next five days apply half inch ribbon twice a day.
  • In patients with a history of hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin, to other quinolones, or to any of the components in this medication
  • Hypersensitivity reactions, Growth of Resistant Organisms with Prolonged Use, Avoidance of contact lens.
  • There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, nursing woman. Safety and effectiveness in infants below the age of one year have not been established.
  • Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Gatifloxacin eye ointment. However, the systemic administration of some quinolones has been shown toelevate plasma concentrations of theophylline, interfere with the metabolism of caffeine, and enhancethe effects of the oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives, and has been associated with transientelevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving systemic cyclosporine concomitantly
  • Conjunctival irritation, increased lacrimation, keratitis, papillary conjunctivitis, chemosis, conjunctival hemorrhage, dry eye, discharge, headache, reduced visual acuity and taste disturbance.
