Herperex eye ointment (Aciclovir)

  • Acyclovir 3% eye ointment.
  • Indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis.
  • Acyclovir is an antiviral agent,a synthetic purine nucleoside analogueused in treatment of herpes simplex (HSV) types I and II. Acyclovir triphosphate inhibits replication of herpes viral DNA by competing with nucleotides for binding to the viral DNA polymerase and by incorporation into and termination of the growing viral DNA chain without affecting normal cellular processes.
  • Apply a 1 cm ribbon of ointment in the lower cul-de-sac of the affected eye 5 times per day (approximately every 3 hours while awake) until the corneal lesion heals and then a 1 cm ribbon 3 times per day for 7 days.
  • Acyclovir is contraindicated for patients who develop sensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir.
  • Patients should be informed that transient, mild stinging immediately following application may occur. Patients should avoid wearing contact lenses when using Herperax ophthalmic ointment.
  • : There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, nursing woman. Safety and effectiveness in infants below the age of one year have not been established.This product should only be used in pregnancy if considered essential by the physician.
  • No clinically significant interactions have been identified resulting from topical administration of other drugs concomitantly withAcyclovir.
  • Blepharitis,mild hyperaemia, discharge, lid oedema and erythema, epithelial microcysts,eye pain (stinging), punctate keratitis and follicular conjunctivitis.Rare reports of blepharitis and very rare reports of immediate hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema and urticaria
