Ferisome Tablets (Ferric Pyrophosphate Oral Liposomal Iron)

  • Each capsule of Ferisome contains 30 mg of elemental Iron.
  • Liposomal elemental iron is indicated in for the management of iron deficiency in adults
  • In the intestinal lumen, liposomal iron is directly absorbed by the M cell of small intestine through endocytosis. From the M cell, the iron passes intact through the lymphatic channels and reaches the liver, where it is opened up by lysosomal enzymes and free iron is made available. The available free iron from the liver binds to iron transporter transferrin, and iron is transferred to the bone marrow for erythrocyte production. The red blood cells (RBCs) produced in the bone marrow is circulated in the body which corrects Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA).
  • One tablet daily as directed by the physician.
  • Hypersensitivity to the drug product. Anaemia not associated with iron deficiency. Haemochromatosis (hereditary condition in which there is iron overload in the body).
  • Administer with caution in patients with haemolytic anaemia, haemoglobinopathies, iron-storage or iron-absorption diseases, existing gastrointestinal disease and hypertension.
  • Published studies on the use in pregnant women have not reported an association with adverse developmental outcomes. Monitor breastfed infants for gastrointestinal toxicity. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in paediatric patients.
  • Concurrent administration with tetracyclines may impair absorption of both agents. Concomitant use of iron products with dimercaprol may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity. Cholestyramine may bind iron to the gastrointestinal tract, thus preventing its absorption.
  • Ferisome has good tolerability and compliance. In Liposomal technology, Iron never comes in contact with intestinal mucosa. Ferisome does not produce side effects which are commonly seen with Conventional Oral Iron. No metallic taste, No gastrointestinal tract irritation, No color change of mucosa, No dark stool.
