  • Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. The mechanism of action is related to inhibition of the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) pathways thatplays a major role in causing inflammation, pain and fever.

Contraindicated for the treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and in moderate to severe renal insufficiency in the perioperative period and who are at risk for volume depletion. Contraindicated in third-trimester of pregnancy.
  • Caution should be exercised in patients with: known CV disease or risk factors for CV disease, prior history of ulcer disease or GI bleeding, fluid retention and edema, impaired renal and hepatic impairment and those taking diuretics or ACE inhibitors. • Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category CThere are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. use during pregnancy (particularly late pregnancy) should be avoided. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
  • Concomitant use of diclofenac and aspirin is not generally recommended because of the potential of increased adverse effects including increased GI bleeding.Concomitant use of ACE Inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), or beta-blockers with diclofenac may diminish the antihypertensive effect of these drugs. The effects of warfarin and NSAIDs on GI bleeding are synergistic, such that users of both drugs together have a risk of serious GI bleeding higher than users of either drug alone.
  • The most frequently reported adverse experiences occurring in patients are: abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, gross bleeding/perforation, heartburn, nausea, GI ulcers (gastric/duodenal) and vomiting.
