Versitol retard (Carbamazepine)

  • Each tablet contains Carbamazepine 200 mg/300 mg/400 mg controlled release Tablets
  • In the treatment of partial and generalized tonic clonic seizures, trigeminal neuralgia
  • The principal metabolite of carbamazepine has anticonvulsant activity it inhibits high frequency neuronal discharges, prolongs s the inactivated stage of sodium channels
  • Adults and Children over 12 Years of Age The recommended initial dose is 200 mg administered twice daily. Increase in weekly increments of 200 mg a day, administered as an equally divided, twice daily dose, until an optimal response is obtained. Dosage generally should not exceed 500 mg twice daily in children 12 to 15 years old; 600 mg twice daily in children 15 to 18 years old; and 800 mg twice daily in adults. Children under 12 years of age : optimal clinical response is achieved at daily doses below 35 mg/kg
  • hypersensitivity to any of the drug components, not be used in patients with a history of previous bone marrow depression
  • Serious and sometimes fatal dermatologic reactions, including toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)
  • Pregnancy Category D. Carbamazepine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman, not recommended, Carbamazepine and its epoxide metabolite are transferred to breast milk and during lactation a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric and adolescent patients have not been established
  • Cytochrome (CYP) 3A4 inhibitors, epoxide hydrolase inhibitors, CYP3A4 inducers, drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 or CYP3A4 (oral contraceptives, delavirdine, nefazodone), phenytoin, CNS depressants, lithium, chloroquine, mefloquine can increase the level of carbamazepine, decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.
