Caution should be exercised if Anxit-SR tablets are to be combined with other psychotropic agents or anticonvulsant drugs. Alprazolam increases plasma concentration of imipramine and desipramine. Alprazolam should be avoided in patients who are receiving inhibitors of CYP3A such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluvoxamine, nefazodone and cimetidine, as these drugs increase the plasma concentration of itraconazole. Fluoxetine and oral contraceptives increase the plasma concentration of alprazolam and propoxyphene decreases the plasma concentration of alprazolam. Carbamazepine can increase alprazolam metabolism and therefore can decrease plasma levels of alprazolam.
  • Most frequent side effects of alprazolam are extension of its pharmacological effects eg, depression, sedation, somnolence, ataxia, memory impairment, dysarthria, dizziness, headache, constipation, dry mouth, fatigue and irritability.
